Frequently Asked Questions

How does a copyright protect my intellectual property?

A copyright provides protection of a person’s “own intellectual creations”, which includes works of literature, art and music and computer program code as “written work”. A copyright is obtained upon creation of the work and registration is not required (but if you register you will gain benefits such as: (i) a verifiable, searchable public record of your copyright, (ii) the ability to file an infringement action and (iii) statutory damages (which are likely higher than the “actual damages” limit on unregistered copyrights).
