In addition to the steps a company should take if an employee resigns (more about handling an employee resignation can be found here), unless the employee is terminated for serious misconduct, as a general good business practice, the company should consider offering some form of separation benefit (e.g., severance and/or payment of COBRA insurance premiums) in exchange for the employee signing a separation agreement, which will include a general release of claims, non-disparagement provision, and other standard terms.
