Jacqui Hatfield spoke with BBC World’s Aaron Heslehurst about the regulatory and financial issues posed by Bitcoin futures trading – the first digital currency to be traded on a major exchange. The futures exchange, which opened earlier this month in Chicago, allows trading based on fluctuations in Bitcoin pricing, which has been extremely volatile throughout 2017.
Jacqui shared her thoughts on how Bitcoin futures will impact pricing volatility and liquidity issues, and how regulation will further legitimize the cryptocurrency. “Some people would say, ‘That’s going to cause a real problem, aren’t we going to run into financial stability issues, and is it too early to do this because it’s such a new currency?’” said Jacqui. “This is precisely the right time in my view to do it.”
