As employee #2 at a venture-backed startup I have first-hand experience wrestling with and solving some of biggest challenges startups face from defining and executing business strategies, navigating customer and vendor relationships to the basic blocking and tackling of setting up payroll and accounting functions.

      • What inspired you to become an emerging companies and venture capital lawyer?

My dad co-founded the first cloud data storage company during the dot-com boom. I had a front-row seat as he and his team developed and launched what was at the time a game-changing technology, pitched VCs and institutional customers to take a leap of faith to store critical data on the internet and took the company public back in 2000. Witnessing the highs and lows of willing a new business into existence was exciting and I knew I wanted to play a part in this process. I'm far from the best coder in the world, but it turns out I'm pretty good at this lawyer thing and really enjoy helping founders navigate the legal intricacies of starting and scaling a company.

Grabbing breakfast with my wife and daughter at our local farmer's market followed by a hike to a nearby river to get a couple hours of fishing in.

My practice covers the full spectrum of incentives matters across the business lifecycle, from inception through to exit and beyond. I have a particular focus on the design and implementation of equity-backed and cash-backed incentive plans for companies in the Tech and Life Sciences industries. Highly tailored and effective incentives are crucial to unlocking strategic growth. I love spending time understanding my clients' businesses to help them implement the best incentives structure for their commercial needs.

        • What inspired you to become an emerging companies and venture capital lawyer?

The opportunity to work with world-leading, cutting-edge businesses while also being "in the trenches" with clients, guiding them through a process often for the first time. It is a huge privilege to have both of those elements in my day to day practice, and isn't something that I could get in most other practice areas as a lawyer.

        • Tell us about a favorite client or project.

Soon after joining Team Orrick, I was helping a client roll out a new share option plan for their employees. There were some unforeseen issues at the very last minute which required a lot of thought and threatened to delay or derail the project (which would have had significant consequences). Over the course of a day of phone calls, we managed not only to resolve the issues that had arisen, but we did so without causing any delay to the project. Guiding our client through that highly stressful situation remains one of my proudest work achievements.

        • If you weren't a tech lawyer, what would you do?

As well as being a lawyer, I am a qualified first responder – so I would probably work in pre-hospital emergency medicine (ideally as a Critical Care Paramedic in an air ambulance team).

        • Tell us something we'd be surprised to know about you.

I have played Airsoft for almost 14 years now – it is great fun, keeps me active and is a fantastic escape from some of the stresses of work and life.

        • What is your ideal weekend?

Spending some time at my favourite coffee shop, with my fiance, Andrea, and our wonderful rescue Newfoundland, Doreen, before heading home to spend the rest of the day on some DIY projects. There's something very rewarding about seeing a big renovation project through from beginning to end.

        • Tell us about a favorite book, work of art or piece of music.

My favourite poem has always been "If", by Rudyard Kipling. I think it teaches a great lesson on life and the values that a person should try to keep, even when the going gets tough: "If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew, To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you, Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’"
