Karen Johnson-McKewan Honored by National Association of Women Judges with Florence K. Murray Award

October.12.2015

Orrick congratulates our partner Karen Johnson-McKewan on receiving the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ) Florence K. Murray Award. The NAWJ presents this annual award to a nominee who is not a judge and who has influenced women to pursue legal careers, opened doors for women attorneys, or advanced opportunities for women within the legal profession.

“This year’s NAWJ award winners have all helped pave the way for women in law and continue to lead by example each day through their words, actions and courage,” said NAWJ President, The Honorable Julie Frantz (Multnomah County Circuit Court, Oregon). “We’re thrilled to honor such deserving contributors to our organization.”

Founded in 1979, the NAWJ works to protect the rights of individuals under the rule of law through strong, committed, diverse judicial leadership, fairness and equality in the courts, and equal access to justice, particularly for women, minorities and other historically disfavored groups. The NAWJ leads initiatives aimed at eradicating human trafficking, and providing education and other support to women in prison. Teamed up with former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the NAWJ also leads a nationwide Informed Voter Project, aimed at providing voter education in states with judicial elections. Orrick has a longstanding relationship with the NAWJ that has included partnering on such projects as the annual Color of Justice event, a unique program that encourages disadvantaged and underrepresented high school students to consider careers in law.

“We are delighted that NAWJ has honored Karen with this award. As a client relationship partner and trial team leader, as leader of Orrick’s women’s initiative and in her community service, Karen has advanced the principles and goals for which NAWJ stands,” said Orrick Chairman & CEO Mitch Zuklie.

A member of Orrick’s intellectual property practice in San Francisco and leader of the firm’s women’s initiative, Karen serves as Chair of NAWJ’s Resource Board, which supports the NAWJ’s programs and promoted the professional advancement and standing of women on both the bench and bar. At the request of California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, Karen has also served as Vice-Chair of the California Coordinating Committee for NAWJ’s Informed Voters Project.
