James is the global head of Orrick’s Oil & Gas practice and focuses his practice on helping companies with their international energy investments.
Widely recognized as a leading energy lawyer in Tokyo and Band 1 ranked by Chambers Global, James advises clients in the oil and gas sector on transactions in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Africa and North America, and has extensive experience advising on large-scale oil and gas projects, LNG sales arrangements, and energy-related mergers and acquisitions.
Lu (Echo) Wang, a senior associate in Orrick’s Shanghai office, is a member of the Corporate Group.
Her practice focuses on advising clients on mergers and acquisitions, private equity, capital markets and SEC compliance matters.
Dr. Hang Xu is a member of the Mergers and Acquisitions, Private Equity and Corporate practices groups and is based in our Düsseldorf office.
Hang has a broad experience in advising Chinese investors doing outbound investments in Europe. Furthermore, he focuses on advising German as well as European investments in China, both, by way of M&A transactions, of joint ventures and wholly foreign owned enterprises. He also has significant experience in advising clients during the post-merger/post-acquisition integration. Hang is heading, together with Dr. Wilhelm Nolting-Hauff, Orrick’s China Desk in Germany
Prior to joining Orrick, Hang worked at several major international law firms in Munich and Shanghai.
Yuko is a member of the Energy and Infrastructure Group. Her practice mainly focuses on M&A, project financing, and permits and authorizations of renewable energy projects. She also handles real estate transactions, environmental conservation and fintech matters.
As of November 2018, Yuko has conducted legal due diligence for clients on 26 solar projects (total 1244MW) and 24 wind projects (total 233MW) in Japan, including Japan’s largest solar project (235MW) and Japan’s largest wind project (121.6MW).
Yuko has been appointed as special member of the Environmental Preservation Committee of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations every year since 2006.
In 2019, Yuko was recognized as a Next Generation Lawyer for Japan in Projects and Energy: International Firms and Joint Ventures category by Legal 500 Asia Pacific.
Betty L. Louie, a partner in Orrick's Beijing office, is a member of the M&A and Private Equity Group. With a particular expertise on Asia outbound investments, Betty has extensive experience in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, private equity, strategic investments and capital markets. She has practiced for more than 20 years on the continents – the United States, Europe and China – on strategic and complex mergers and acquisitions.
She regularly advises Chinese corporations and financial institutions investing and operating outside of China. Since 2012, she has been consistently recognized and ranked in legal industry publications, such as Chambers Global, Chambers Asia Pacific and Milano Finanza. Clients have praised Betty as “highly experienced in helping Chinese companies and investors carry out transactions,” “having a specialist knowledge of the Chinese market” and “offers practical and efficient solutions.”
In addition, Betty also represents a broad range of foreign investors (United States, Middle Eastern, European) in connection with their global investments and acquisitions.
She advises companies in various industries, including energy, technology, financial services, healthcare, medical devices, real estate and advanced manufacturing.
Before relocating to China, Betty practiced in New York for more than 10 years, and also practiced in Italy for close to 10 years.
Mimiao Hu, a senior associate in Orrick’s Beijing office, is a member of the Intellectual Property Group.
Her work has included trademark and copyright protection strategies, intellectual property litigation, unfair competition, intellectual property due diligence, cybersquatting and related technology issues. Mimiao has also advised clients on export regulation of military and dual-use items and customs regulation in China. Mimiao also works extensively on cybersecurity & data privacy issues for both Chinese and international clients.
Prior to joining Orrick, Mimiao was a senior associate in the Beijing and Shanghai offices of a major PRC law firm.
Minako plays a vital role in the rise of Japan’s renewable energy market.
Minako has significant experience advising international and domestic sponsors and developers on complex and innovative projects. She was called upon by the Japanese government in structuring the renewable Feed-in-Tariff scheme in Japan and prepared the government’s model contracts for specific contracts (power purchase contract/interconnection contract), which are a key component of the Feed-in-Tariff scheme in Japan.Backed by her experience in her prior career as a public prosecutor in Japan, she also serves as a member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Supervising Committee for Public Bidding (Tokyo-to Nyusatsu Kanshi Iinkai) which advocates public rights to the fairness and adequacy of the public bidding procedures of the government. Minako practiced at Orrick's New York office in 2004-2005.
Anson Chan, a managing associate in Orrick’s Hong Kong office, is a member of the M&A and Private Equity Group.
Anson focuses her practice on representing private fund sponsors and investors in the formation and structuring of alternative investment vehicles, including pan-Asian private equity funds, venture capital funds, hedge funds and hybrid funds, as well as in their investments, acquisitions, divestments and restructurings across the Greater China region. She regularly handles matters covering funds establishment and license applications.
She is also experienced in handling mergers and acquisitions involving Hong Kong listed companies, initial public offerings, as well as other compliance and general corporate matters.
Prior to joining Orrick, Anson worked at Clifford Chance and Sidley Austin in Hong Kong.
Yali Hu, a senior associate in Orrick's Beijing office, is a member of the Intellectual Property Group.
Yali assists local- and foreign-based multinational companies with all aspects of their intellectual property rights in China, Europe and the United States, including Section 337 U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) litigation. Yali has extensional experience in patent, trademark, domain name, copyright and trade secret.
Yali’s intellectual property-related services include patent filing and subsequent maintenance affairs for her clients.
