Jared Bobrow Partner

Since the late 1980s, Jared has been involved extensively in all aspects of patent and technology-related litigation, including trials and appeals. He has earned a reputation with clients for managing complex cases efficiently and creatively. Jared is a hands-on litigator who learns and develops the critical facts, masters the technology and law, and weaves the facts and law into a story that a judge or jury will understand and embrace.

Jared is ranked Band 2 in the field of Intellectual Property: Patent in California and Intellectual Property: Nationwide by Chambers USA, and he has been recognized as a leading lawyer by Chambers Global 2013-2022, with sources describing him as “an exceptional litigator; one of the smartest lawyers you will ever meet,” as "extremely strategic, delivers excellent work product and argues well before the court ” and as “probably the finest patent litigator I have ever worked with. Mr. Bobrow teaches patent litigation at U.C. Berkeley Law School, and has spoken and written on patent law, patent litigation, and trade secret matters.

Mr. Bobrow graduated in 1986 from Columbia Law School, where he served on the Columbia Law Review. In 1986 and 1987, he clerked for the Honorable Charles P. Sifton (E.D.N.Y.).

He has extensive M&A experience involving numerous types of business. He has particular experience in the area of the taxation of REITs, having represented both public and private REITs for many years, and in the area of real estate transactions and partnerships. Grady's private investment fund practice includes the representation of real estate funds, venture capital funds and hedge funds, as well as institutional investors in such funds. 

Prior to joining Orrick, Grady worked for the firm of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison LLP, where he served on the firm’s Executive Committee and as Chair of the Tax Group.

Lisa M. Bowman Of Counsel

Lisa partners with companies of all stages to refine their policies and practices—with a goal of deterring unnecessary litigation. Lisa strives to gain in-depth knowledge of the culture and business goals of her clients, so she can be responsive and efficient.

Lisa has significant experience advising employers on complex issues, including wage and hour compliance and audits, worker classification, disability accommodation, employee leaves, commissions and bonuses, misappropriation of trade secrets, employment agreements, onboarding, employee discipline and terminations, and managing and/or conducting sensitive workplace investigations.

As a litigator of high-stakes employment cases, Lisa secured many victories for her clients, including a complete defense verdict in a disability discrimination arbitration, dismissal of a disparate impact age discrimination claim in a collective action brought against a high-profile tech client, and successful oppositions to motions to certify wage and hour classes. Lisa’s background as an employment litigator helps her identify issues for her clients before they become a problem.

Before attending law school, Lisa worked as a journalist covering law and policy. Her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CNET, and Bloomberg. Lisa draws upon this experience to guide clients with strategic internal and external messaging when complicated legal challenges arise.

Devin Brennan Partner

San Francisco; Boston

Such transactions have involved both long- and short-term, fixed and variable rate obligations, public-private partnerships (P3s), commercial paper, swaps, credit and liquidity enhancement, and revenue bonds for transportation and utility issuers, as well as a number of sizable special purpose financings. Devin has also represented multiple clients in connection with chapter 9 bankruptcies, restructurings and other workouts.

Devin is a partner in Orrick’s San Francisco and Boston offices and chairs the Firm’s Transportation Finance Group.  Devin is a frequent speaker on topics in infrastructure finance, having previously served as Chair of both the Bond Buyer's California Public Finance Conference and its national Infrastructure Conference.  Devin has been a member of the Firm's Hiring and Summer Program Committees, and continues to help organize Orrick's annual summer associate surf trip to Capitola Beach. Devin is also a member of the Strategy Council for OneJustice, an organization dedicated to transforming the delivery of legal services to people in need.

Evan Brewer Senior Associate

Drawing on his education background in aeronautical engineering, computer science, economics, and international relations, Evan can translate the complex and constantly-evolving business realities of today’s technology companies into cohesive and powerful legal arguments. In his practice, Evan guides cutting-edge U.S. and European technology companies through patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret matters, and counsels companies on emerging cybersecurity and data privacy issues. Evan’s clients specialize in machine learning, autonomous driving, integrated circuits, consumer electronics, e-commerce, and medical device technology.

In his pro bono practice, Evan represents domestic violence survivors and counsels an international NGO on environmental law issues.

Before joining Orrick, Evan clerked for Judge Ronald M. Whyte at the Northern District of California.

Evan graduated magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he also served as Executive Articles Editor of the Hastings Science and Technology Law Review. While in law school, he was an extern for Judge Lucy H. Koh at the Northern District of California.

Outside of work, Evan enjoys competitive ski racing and endurance cycling.

James E. Burns Jr. Senior Counsel

Jim conducts internal investigations for clients and represents them in regulatory investigations and proceedings before the SEC and state securities regulatory authorities. He has broad experience in jury and bench trial matters before federal, tax and state courts. He has handled numerous class actions and litigated multi-district cases involving claims under RICO and federal and state securities law, as well as professional services malpractice claims and various business torts.

Jim has extensive experience in commercial arbitrations before various arbitration and mediation tribunals, including the American Arbitration Association, the New York Stock Exchange, the National Association of Securities Dealers and privately chosen arbitrators. He acts on behalf of technology companies, venture capitalists, securities issuers, directors, brokers, underwriters, promoters and mutual funds.

Jim has represented Retek, Inc., Touch America Holdings, Inc., RS Investment Management, Inc., Cygnus, Inc., Everen Securities Inc., Chiron Corp., Intevac, Inc., Accel Partners, TA Associates, Kenetech, Pope & Talbot, Citrix Systems, Inc., Everex and The Photonics Fund.
