Before his retirement as a partner, he was also the Partner-in-Charge of Lawyer Development for a number of years. While still practicing, he served at times as the firm’s General Counsel, Executive Director, Peer Review Committee Chair and member of the Partner Compensation Committee. He still acts as an advisor to the firm on matters affecting lawyer development.
Tom concentrated his practice in banking and commercial transactions. He represented banks and other financial institutions in a variety of transactions, including syndicated and single-lender credit agreements (both secured and unsecured), project financings, public finance transactions, and “synthetic” and other lease arrangements. As a lecturer and panelist, Tom frequently spoke at seminars on a range of topics related to his practice.
He served for several years as co-counsel of the International Bankers Association in California. He has been a member of the State Bar of California’s Business Law Section’s Financial Institutions Committee and Uniform Commercial Code Committee. In addition, he has been a member of the San Francisco Symphony’s Business Gifts Committee.
Before joining Orrick, Tom was Vice President and Counsel at California First Bank (now Union Bank of California) in San Francisco. He was a visiting attorney at Clifford-Turner (now Clifford Chance), Solicitors, in London.

With a background in biomedical engineering, she provides expertise in matters involving a wide range of technologies, from life sciences to computer programming.
Avery graduated cum laude from the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. While at ASU Law, she served as the President of the Intellectual Property Students' Association, Co-Chaired an ASU Law Event hosting United States Patent and Trademark Office Director Kathi Vidal and several Patent Trial and Appeal Board judges, and was a Fellow at The McCarthy Institute, ASU Law's premier Intellectual Property research organization. She also served as a Limited Recognition Practitioner in the Lisa Foundation Patent Law Clinic, in which she provided supervised legal services, representing pro bono clients before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She obtained her B.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Arizona State University, where she earned the Moeur Award for achieving a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 4.0.
Prior to joining Orrick, Avery served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable James A. Teilborg in the United States District Court, District of Arizona. In that role, she addressed complex legal issues in numerous areas of law, including patent litigation, employment disputes, civil rights actions, and administrative law. Isaac draws upon his technical background in contextualizing complex issues into the elements of legal claims. Isaac is experienced in representing some of the world’s largest and most innovative companies through all phases of litigation in matters involving video-on-demand technology, patented software, and gaming system architecture. He has assisted in prosecuting several patents, has advised on AI-related business strategy, and has worked on cases involving patented designs, false advertising, unfair competition, computer hacking, and securities fraud. He has also analyzed significant questions in high-profile litigation relating to the development of generative AI tools, the circumvention of technological barriers to scrape web pages, the enforceability of website terms of service, and open-source license interpretation.
Prior to joining Orrick, Isaac served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army National Guard. He currently serves in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
Isaac is also an enthusiastic participant in Orrick's pro bono efforts. He has drafted international law memoranda, assisted in various civil rights litigation efforts for large pro-bono clients, analyzed noteworthy qualified immunity decisions to determine whether an appeal is necessary, and helped refugees with immigration paperwork.
