Jason Lang パートナー

Mr. Lang has litigated cases before district courts, state courts, and the International Trade Commission. He has an extensive practice in patent office proceedings, including ex parte reexaminations and inter partes reviews. He has been a top-filer in inter partes reviews. Recent matters include work with memories (DRAM, Flash and hard drives), semiconductor tools, semiconductor packaging, and design software.

His counseling work includes developing defensive and offensive intellectual property strategies in view of potential competitor litigation. He also assists clients in indemnity disputes, product launches, patent acquisition, licensing and portfolio management.

Before focusing on intellectual property litigation and counseling, Mr. Lang spent a year working for the District Attorney’s Office in Atlanta, Georgia, where he had considerable exposure to numerous trials.

Mr. Lang’s public service commitments include steady work for housing clinics. Mr. Lang recently first-chaired a four-day trial, led a successful mediation, and obtained a favorable settlement for clients of different local clinics.

Matthew is a senior associate in Orrick's New York office and a member of the Banking and Finance Group. He advises major financial institutions, public and privately owned companies, sponsors and private credit funds in effectively assessing legal risks in complex secured and unsecured commercial finance transactions. His experience extends to a wide variety of finance transactions, including broadly syndicated loans, asset-based financings, private equity acquisition financings, debt restructurings, dividend recapitalizations and project financings. Matthew also supports other practice groups, including the Mergers & Acquisitions/Private Equity group, the Technology Companies Group and the Energy and Infrastructure group, on various financing matters for clients.

Laura Lariu パートナー

She is primarily focused on space & defense transactions, venture capital financings and providing external general counsel guidance. Before joining Orrick, Laura led companies through transformational growth as general counsel and practiced ECVC law.

Laura was an early employee of rocket manufacturer Relativity Space and guided the company's legal strategy through the company's (and world's) first launch of a predominantly 3D-printed full-scale rocket. Throughout that period, Laura helped negotiate $1.3 billion in private funding. She helped secure millions of square feet of physical infrastructure, including a former Boeing C-17 factory and facilities at NASA's Stennis Space Center. She also negotiated customer contracts of over $1 billion with major global satellite operators, and laid the foundation for complying within a national security framework and developing an innovative IP portfolio.

Prior to Relativity Space, Laura was general counsel at Virgin Hyperloop. Before that, Laura was as a corporate attorney with Gunderson Dettmer in New York and worked on innovative deals (venture financings, M&A, IPO) throughout the city's tech boom of 2011-2016. She also applied her fluency in 5 languages to work on a wide array of international deals.

Laura is a founding member of the L Suite, formerly TechGC, a platform of over 2,000 in-house legal leaders at leading tech companies and venture capital funds. She previously served on its Executive Board and Steering Committee and co-led the Los Angeles chapter. While Werner’s corporate and M&A experience spans a broad range of industries, he has built a strong focus on and deep knowledge of the Energy & Infrastructure sector. Laura Brooks Najemy パートナー

Laura’s litigation experience spans the gamut from initial pleadings through trial and everything in between. She represents numerous clients in the technology, automotive, retail, consumer products, and real estate industries. Her clients appreciate her diligence, effective communication, and excellent strategic judgment. At Orrick, Laura leads the Women’s Initiative for the Boston office and co-chairs the firm’s Middle East & North African inclusion network. She also co-chairs the Boston Bar Association’s Intellectual Property section.

Laura served as a Special District Attorney for Middlesex County in 2014. In that capacity, she prosecuted felony and misdemeanor criminal cases, trying jury and bench trials to final verdict and arguing dispositive and evidentiary motions. In 2010–2011, Laura completed a yearlong fellowship at the Political Asylum/Immigration Representation (PAIR) Project in Boston, where she assisted individuals who were affirmatively seeking asylum as well as defended individuals who were in removal proceedings in front of the Immigration Court. Through her pro bono practice, Laura continues to be committed to working to help individuals with various immigration matters.

Harmann is a member of Orrick’s Supreme Court and Appellate group. He counsels clients in high-stakes constitutional, administrative, intellectual property, and commercial disputes across industries. His experience includes representing some of the world’s largest companies, nonprofits, and universities in trade secret cases, patent and copyright disputes, challenges to federal and state laws and regulations, and complex business litigation. Harmann also serves as an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center, where he teaches the seminar Contemporary Civil Rights Issues at the Supreme Court.

Harmann maintains an active public interest practice and has represented clients in federal immigration appeals challenging their unlawful removal from the United States, advocated for criminal defendants in state appellate courts, and contributed to a gender equity investigation of the NCAA. Harmann is experienced in election law, as he has represented Pennsylvania in defending its certification of the 2020 presidential election results at the U.S. Supreme Court, defended the constitutionality of New York’s candidate filing deadline in federal court, and submitted briefs in support of election administration grants in state and federal court. Governor Andrew Beshear commissioned Harmann as a Kentucky Colonel—the Commonwealth’s highest civilian honor—for successfully defending the Governor’s COVID-19 public health measures at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Harmann served as a law clerk to Justice Sonia Sotomayor of the U.S. Supreme Court; Judge Raymond J. Lohier, Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; and Judge Andrew L. Carter, Jr., of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Earlier in his career, he was an associate at Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP. Before law school, he was a Truman-Albright Fellow at the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund. Harmann graduated with honors from Harvard Law School and Columbia University, where he was named a Truman Scholar.

Meg helps online service providers comply with online safety and consumer protection laws by marrying her knowledge of the data-driven environment with a decade of experience in white-collar and regulatory investigations. She also advises her clients on developing Trust & Safety compliance programs to manage the risks of misleading or harmful content online such as child exploitation or hate speech that could lead to investigations or litigation.

As a crisis responder, Meg assists clients at every stage, from starting a dialogue with regulators to responding to formal inquiries to managing investigations. She has led diverse teams of lawyers and consultants in conducting investigations, including those initiated by the DOJ, SEC, FTC, OIG, State AGs, and Congress. She has also acted on both sides of corporate Monitorships, serving on two Monitorship teams, and representing two international companies undergoing years-long scrutiny of an external Monitor. This experience provides her with unique insight into best practices in the assessment and development of ethics, integrity, and online safety trust and compliance programs.

Meg co-leads Orrick’s Orange County women’s inclusion network. Early in her career, she worked with LGBTQ+ youth at the National Center for Lesbian Rights and in the Juvenile Unit at the Santa Clara County Office of the Public Defender. She works pro bono for immigration and women's health organizations. She lives in California with her spouse and kids.

Steven’s practice includes representing local and state government issuers, tribal governments, eligible borrowers and underwriters in connection with general obligation bond financings, revenue bond financings and lease financings.  Steven serves as bond counsel to the Oregon Department of Transportation, Oregon Housing and Community Services, the Oregon Facilities Authority and a number of Oregon municipalities.

Prior to joining Orrick, Steven worked in publishing in various roles including as a business publication editor, business-focused journalist and news reporter covering trends in various industries as well as municipal and state government, law enforcement and state and federal court matters.

Steven volunteers as a coach for the nationally-recognized We The People program, working with Portland high school students to explore historical and contemporary Constitutional issues in a team competition format sponsored by the Center for Civic Education and Oregon’s Classroom Law Project.
