Carolina Garcia helps clients navigate the complex world of wage & hour, discrimination and pay equity litigation in state and federal court.
Carolina developed her passion for litigation prior to joining Orrick through her service as a law clerk and judicial extern in the Northern District of California.
In addition to her practice, Carolina also devotes her time to the community. Carolina dedicates a portion of her practice to providing pro bono employment counseling services to nonprofit organizations. She previously worked at the East Bay Community Law Center, where she helped those who are HIV positive gain access to disability benefits, among other critical needs.
Hannah is a member of Orrick's Litigation Group and Supreme Court and Appellate practice.
Hannah represents clients in high-stakes, complex litigation. She has co-authored briefs in appellate tribunals and district courts across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court. Her work has covered a wide range of subject areas, such as constitutional law, data privacy, intellectual property, and general commercial litigation.
Hannah maintains an active pro bono practice, focusing on election law, First Amendment, criminal, and immigration matters.
Prior to joining Orrick, Hannah served as a law clerk to the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and to the Honorable Randolph D. Moss of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Before law school, she worked as an analyst for the Iowa Senate, specializing in communications, as well as government oversight and transportation policy.
Sheryl Koval Garko is an experienced trial lawyer who focuses on trademark, copyright, and trade secret litigation. Clients hire Sheryl for her creative, strategic, business-focused advice enriched by her extensive courtroom experience and working knowledge of a wide range of technologies.
For almost 15 years, she has represented clients ranging from Fortune 50 companies to start-ups in high stakes litigation and at trial. She has worked with leading technology companies and some of the most recognizable brands in the world, including New Balance, Samsung, and Microsoft. She has tried cases to both judges and juries in federal courts across the United States and is experienced practicing before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and the International Trade Commission.
Sheryl honed her skills in high profile, precedent setting cases. She represented New Balance at trial in the International Trade Commission in the successful defense of trade dress claims brought by Nike/Converse in a case that IP Law360 named it the top trademark ruling of 2016. Sheryl also represented Aereo against the major U.S. television networks in defense of its novel, industry-disrupting system for providing internet access to over-the-air broadcast television. That case ultimately went to the Supreme Court, which addressed copyright law issues of first impression.
Having prepared countless cases for trial, Sheryl has a clear understanding of the importance of identifying litigation strategy early on to direct the case in a cost- effective and efficient manner. Sheryl also leverages her wealth of experience to counsel clients on strategies to protect intellectual property when avoiding litigation is a strategic business priority.
Having also litigated a number of patent cases throughout her career, she brings to each matter a unique understanding of the intersection of copyright, trademark, trade secret and patent law. A superb communicator, she is able to explain diverse areas of complex technology to a judge or jury.
In 2017, World Trademark Review 1000, a peer and client survey, named Sheryl as one of the leading intellectual property litigators in the world, describing her as “‘highly recommended’ for her ‘helpful and creative advice,’ which is ‘always of first-rate quality.’” In the 2018 edition, WTR 1000 stated that Sheryl “offers significant firepower to any contentious mandate.”
She was named a 2017 Woman Worth Watching by Profiles in Diversity Journal. Sheryl was also singled out for Metropolitan Corporate Counsel’s Women in Business and the Law 2017 edition. In 2015, Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly named her one of the Top Women of Law and she received a 2015 Leadership Excellence Award from the National Diversity Council.

Dawn Pinault is a member of the Orrick Analytics group. The group specializes in using technology and project management discipline to assist firm attorneys with litigation and transactional tasks, particularly tasks that involve large volumes of data and documents.
Dawn works with litigation attorneys and third party vendors to manage the review and production of documents relevant to investigations and litigation. Dawn's work includes using early case assessment technology to analyze, categorize and cull data. She also manages teams of specialists performing document review, redaction, analysis, production and drafting privilege logs. Dawn assists the litigation team to prepare for trial, including drafting deposition summaries, factual memoranda and exhibit charts. Dawn also works with practice office attorneys on transactional tasks, including contract review and due diligence.
Dawn is the leader of the Lean In Circle at Orrick’s Global Operation Center In this role she acts as a facilitator, organizer, and mentor for fellow women in an effort to inspire and support women to develop their leadership and communication skills.
Prior to joining Orrick, Dawn was a tax preparer for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. She also worked at Lundy, Flitter, Beldecos & Berger, P.C., in Narberth, Pennsylvania.

Evan J. Gascoine is a member of the Complex Litigation and Dispute Resolution group at Orrick's Wheeling office. Evan focuses his practice on Mass Torts & Product Liability and has extensive experience representing companies in a wide range of matters. Additionally, his work as an in-house attorney gave him unique insight into the issues most important to his clients.
Prior to joining Orrick, Evan was a law clerk for Chief Judge Gary L. Lancaster in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, where he worked on cases involving class action, employment discrimination, civil rights, qui tam, patent, social security and ERISA claims.
Evan is now a member of the Orrick team acting as National Counsel to Union Carbide Corporation and Johnson & Johnson in connection with ongoing product liability litigation. In that role, Evan shares responsibility in developing and coordinating defense strategy across the United States on a daily basis.
Evan also served a multi-year secondment with The Dow Chemical Company as a Case Manager in Dow's Product Liability & Insurance Litigation Group. In this capacity, he managed asbestos, premises, and other product liability dockets for Dow and Union Carbide across the United States. He provided oversight to thousands of product liability claims and handled case evaluation, resolution, and business strategies. He also directed outside counsel and trial counsel teams and attended settlement conferences and mediations on behalf of Union Carbide and Dow.
Sara Gates is an associate in the Silicon Valley Office and a member of the firm's corporate group.
Sara focuses primarily on corporate governance issues as well as mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions and capital markets.
Brad focuses on project development and finance matters and corporate transactions in the energy industry, primarily in the conventional and renewable power and midstream oil and gas sectors.
He represents investors and developers in a broad range of transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, private equity investments and other commercial transactions involving the development, construction, financing, acquisition, sale and investment in power generation, exploration, production, storage, transportation, distribution, marketing and other energy-related projects and businesses.
Nicole Gelsomini is an associate in Orrick’s San Francisco office. Her practice spans cybersecurity and privacy matters, complex commercial disputes, and government and internal investigations.Nicole has defended companies in class action litigation and government enforcement following the announcement of cybersecurity and privacy incidents, as well as the initial investigation of potential incidents. She has also represented clients in securities, antitrust, and other commercial disputes. Prior to law school, Nicole worked as a teacher and for Teach For America.
Matthew Gemello, a corporate partner in the Silicon Valley office, is a member of Orrick's M&A and Private Equity group.
A seasoned deal lawyer, Matthew guides global technology companies and their financial sponsors through transformational domestic and cross-border transactions.
Matthew has been recognized as a leading lawyer by Legal 500 and Super Lawyers Northern California, and was selected by the San Francisco and Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the top 10 Innovative Corporate Lawyers in California.
Matthew leads our Global Corporate Business Unit and serves as acting leader of the global M&A and Private Equity practice. Prior to joining Orrick, Matthew was a partner at a global law firm, where he was chair of the firm’s North America corporate and securities practice and chair of its North America pro bono practice.
Andrea's practice focuses mainly on renewable energy, in Italy and abroad.
Andrea regularly works on M&A and private equity transactions in the energy and infrastructure industries, assisting sponsors, developers and investors in the acquisition or sale of totality, majority or minority shareholdings, and in project construction/management related matters. He has advised on projects in Italy, the UK, Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, Ghana and Namibia.
Andrea also has significant experience in financing transactions, having assisted various sponsors in a number of project finance, asset finance, refinancing and leasing transactions. He assists clients in drafting and negotiating all transaction documents, including share purchase agreements, joint venture agreements, shareholders' agreements, facility agreements, PPAs, EPC and O&M agreements. Andrea also counsels clients on general corporate matters and day-to-day operating matters, including contracts management and a host of related legal matters.
Andrea has also drafted and negotiated several settlement agreements for disputes arisen between owners and contractors in relation to the construction of power plants, and participated in international arbitrations on these matters.
Andrea is lecturer at the training course “The EGP school of business development program” promoted by Enel Green Power, dedicated to its Business Development professionals and delivered by SDA Bocconi School of Management, the Business School of Bocconi University. Andrea focuses his lessons on international business contracts, joint venture and acquisition agreements.
Nick’s clients include industrial corporations, government entities, financial institutions and infrastructure investment funds. He also advises on cross-border M&A transactions in his specialist sector areas. He has a particular interest in renewable energy projects.
Nick has been involved on major operations such as the construction of the world’s largest dam, Inga 3, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a $500 million 144A/Regulation S bond issuance for Millicom International Cellular S.A., a leading telecommunication operator in emerging markets, and the financing by the Agence Française de Développement for a 5.9 MW photovoltaic plant in Benin.
Before joining Orrick, Nick spent 16 years working at another international law firm. He is admitted to the Paris Bar as a Solicitor of England and Wales.
Employment lawyer Hannah Ghaffari takes each case’s legal, business and interpersonal elements into account. By approaching her case through the emotional and professional lens of all parties involved, she’s able to offer a more successful path to resolution.
Her cases involve a wide range of employment issues, such as wage and hour, pay equity, and discrimination disputes. Hannah also offers targeted counseling to help employers avoid and mitigate risk throughout the year.
In addition to employment, she has handled various business disputes, including breach of contract disputes on behalf of Microsoft, a defamation case, and a high-profile right of publicity case. She also represented Oracle in Oracle v. Google, a multi-billion dollar copyright trial.
Hannah is also active in Orrick’s pro bono program, having represented individuals seeking asylum in the United States and an individual seeking enforcement of a family support order in New York Family Court. She currently represents a family that was separated at the U.S. border.
