Cynthia Larsen, a Sacramento litigation partner, has more than 25 years of experience in business and governmental litigation and appeals. She focuses on the representation of public agency and private clients in complex disputes involving public agency and governmental law, insurance and insurance insolvency, government contracts and procurement, business torts, health care, environmental and employment law.

She is an Appellate Law Specialist certified by the State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization. She has handled appellate matters in the U.S. Supreme Court, various federal appellate courts and in the California Supreme Court and appellate courts. She is a veteran trial attorney and has applied her experience as a former U.S. Department of Justice trial attorney to serving corporate and governmental clients. She recently served for five years as the partner-in-charge of Orrick’s Sacramento office. She also served for several years as head of Orrick’s Litigation Training Program and as vice-chair of the firm’s Litigation Division.

Before joining Orrick, Cynthia was an attorney at Condon & Forsyth in Washington, D.C. from 1982 to 1985. Prior to that, she was a trial attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where she served in the Honors Program and specialized in civil trial work. Representative cases handled by Cynthia on behalf of the United States include: Sweet v. United States, 528 F.Supp. 1068 (D.S.D. 1081), aff’d, 687 F.2d 246 (8th Cir. 1982) (trial counsel); Pike v. United States, 652 F.2d 31 (9th Cir. 1981) (trial and appellate counsel); Gaspard v. United States, 544 F.Supp. 55 (E.D.La. 1982); Marek v. United States, 639 F.2d 1164 (5th Cir. 1981) (trial counsel).

Cynthia frequently writes and lectures on litigation topics. She serves as a pro tem settlement conference judge for the Sacramento Superior Court and as a federal court mediator.

In addition to being admitted in California, Cynthia is also admitted in Idaho (inactive) and the District of Columbia (inactive).

Nicholas A. Laveris is Of Counsel in Orrick's Restructuring Group. Nick advises investment banks, commercial banks, broker-dealers, hedge funds and other financial institutions on legal issues related to the purchase and sale of domestic and international par and distressed assets, including bilateral loans, syndicated loans, loan participations and derivative structured products.

Nick also represents clients in the purchase and sale of claims in bankruptcy, including administrative claims and trade claims. Robert has practiced environmental law in connection with energy project financing and other transactional matters for nearly 30 years. His clients include major energy players, many Fortune 500 companies and all of the major investment and commercial banking institutions active in project finance.

Bob's career covers project financing of electricity generation facilities and major infrastructure projects, as well as exploration and development, refining, pipelines, offshore production and shipping. He has represented project sponsors, lenders and investors in connection with all aspects of fossil fuel development and use, as well as solar, wind, biomass, waste-to-energy and other renewable technologies. He is an expert on siting, land use, permitting, federal and state environmental review, cultural resources, endangered species and other environmental regulatory aspects of development of greenfield sites. Erin applies her extensive experience as a primary patent examiner and Federal Circuit law clerk to assist clients with their most complex intellectual property and technology-related needs.

Erin is a litigator and appellate attorney in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. She has represented clients in federal district courts throughout the country as well as before the International Trade Commission and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.  Erin’s technical expertise covers a wide-range of technologies, including computer hardware and software, medical devices, wireless communications, and semiconductors. Arbitration, particularly involving FRAND licensing disputes, is also a regular part of Erin’s practice.

Alongside her intellectual property practice, Erin maintains an active pro bono docket representing veterans before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and on appeal to the Federal Circuit. As a member of a military family, Erin is particularly passionate about helping veterans protect their rights and secure treatment for their service-related injuries.

Barbara provides tax advice in connection with tax-exempt financing transactions for cities, counties, states, school districts, charter schools, housing authorities, higher education authorities, state agencies and other tax-exempt organizations.

She also has significant experience representing nonprofit organizations. Formerly an attorney with the Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service, Barbara has represented clients before the IRS in a variety of matters involving tax-exempt bonds, including audits and private letter ruling requests. Alvin Lee is a partner in Orrick's New York office and a member of the firm's Complex Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group.  His practice focuses on complex commercial litigation and products liability lawsuits, most notably for clients in the energy, chemical, and financial services industries.

Alvin represents clients at all stages of litigation in federal and state courts throughout the country.  He has extensive experience advising clients in high-stakes, cross-border commercial disputes, and has particular expertise in actions involving complex enforcement and regulatory issues in foreign jurisdictions.

Alvin has represented a number of energy and manufacturing companies in bet-the-company disputes arising out of off-take/financing agreements tied to the development of large-scale production facilities.  He currently represents the Hemlock Semiconductor Group (a multinational joint venture) in a series of actions alleging breaches of long-term "take or pay" supply agreements by manufacturers in the solar energy industry.  These actions have been brought against defendants located in China, Germany, Japan, and Taiwan, and have resulted in over $1 billion in precedent-setting judgments for Hemlock. 

Alvin also currently represents several major financial institutions in commercial litigation, regulatory proceedings, and securities-related actions.  In addition, he has represented PricewaterhouseCoopers in a series of audit malpractice and shareholder derivative suits.

An experienced trial and appellate advocate, Alvin has tried state and federal cases to jury verdict, and has argued multiple appeals before the federal Courts of Appeals.

Alvin also has significant experience defending companies in mass tort & products liability suits.  He previously served as a member of Orrick's team of national coordinating and litigation counsel for The Dow Chemical Company's wholly owned subsidiary, Union Carbide Corporation, in relation to its substantial asbestos docket. 

Highly active in pro bono matters, Alvin focuses his pro bono representation on low-income LGBT communities.  In 2015, Alvin was awarded Orrick's firmwide Pro Bono Award in recognition of his dedication and achievements.
