Laura is a founding member of Orrick’s technology companies practice in the Pacific Northwest. She is passionate about working with women and men to grow their business at every stage. She serves as a trusted advisor to her clients in multiple capacities: providing strategic advice in the boardroom, designing and executing financing strategies, negotiating complex transactions from venture financings to successful exits, and supporting day-to-day legal needs of executive teams.

Jared Bobrow is co-chair of Orrick’s global Intellectual Property practice group. He specializes in litigating patent disputes nationwide, both in district courts and at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He also litigates and counsels clients in the field of trade secrets, particularly those involving complex technology. 

Since the late 1980s, Mr. Bobrow has been involved extensively in all aspects of patent and technology-related litigation, including trials and appeals. He has earned a reputation with clients for managing complex cases efficiently and creatively. Mr. Bobrow is a hands-on litigator who learns and develops the critical facts, masters the technology and law, and weaves the facts and law into a story that a judge or jury will understand and embrace.

Grady Bolding, senior counsel in the San Francisco office, is a member of the Tax Group. Grady practices tax law, primarily in the areas of mergers & acquisitions, REITs and real estate transactions and private investment funds.

Stephen Bomse, Senior Counsel in Orrick’s San Francisco office, is a member of the firm’s Antitrust and Competition Group.

He is widely regarded as one of the nation’s leading antitrust lawyers, having tried cases throughout the United States involving multibillion-dollar claims while also maintaining a significant appellate practice, including his successful representation of Weyerhaeuser Company in a major Section 2 case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Steve also represents clients from around the world in other types of complex commercial litigation, both at the trial and appellate level.

In recent years, Steve has focused his practice to a significant extent on cartel cases, including in particular companies, such as Sony, located in various countries in Asia. He has been involved in most of the major recent international cartel cases involving electronic products, such as DRAM, SRAM and LCD representing companies from Japan, Taiwan and China.

While the primary focus of Steve's practice has been, and remains antitrust, he also has had an active trial and appellate practice outside the competition area. In addition to several cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, he has argued appeals in seven separate federal circuits and has tried cases in a number of different federal districts.

Thomas M. Bondy Senior Counsel Supreme Court & Appellate

Tom Bondy is a Senior Counsel in Orrick’s Supreme Court & Appellate practice. He has had a distinguished career in government service at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice.

As FBI Deputy General Counsel, Tom oversaw the Bureau’s nationwide civil litigation docket, including employment disputes, Freedom of Information Act cases, Constitutional tort suits, and an array of matters implicating law enforcement and national security equities. He supervised more than one hundred Office of General Counsel personnel, and advised the FBI’s Director, Deputy Director and other executive management officials regarding especially sensitive litigation issues.

Prior to serving at the FBI, Tom spent 25 years with the Department of Justice, Civil Division, Appellate Staff, as an appellate litigator and supervisor. In that capacity, he oversaw the court of appeals and Supreme Court work of the Appellate staff’s attorneys across the full range of U.S. government subject areas, including Constitutional issues, anti-terrorism and national security, Federal Tort Claims Act, False Claims Act, Bivens, personnel and federal labor relations, Freedom of Information Act, administrative law, attorney fees, and government benefits. Tom personally briefed and orally argued more than one hundred cases in all of the federal courts of appeals and several state appellate courts, and drafted dozens of U.S. Supreme Court merits briefs, amicus briefs, certiorari petitions, and oppositions to certiorari petitions. One of the principal architects of the Justice Department’s litigation strategy in high-stakes appeals, Tom was considered one of the agency’s go-to advocates.

Tom received the Justice Department’s John Marshall Award for outstanding appellate advocacy, as well as the Attorney General’s Award for furthering the interests of U.S. national security. He has served as an instructor at the Attorney General’s Advocacy Institute and is also an Adjunct Professor at American University’s Washington College of Law.

Before joining DOJ, Tom clerked for then-Judge (now retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice) Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

While in law school, Ryan participated in the USC Hale Moot Court Honors Program. He also externed for the Honorable Virginia A. Phillips in the Central District of California. Before law school, Ryan served in the Teach For America corps and taught middle school history.

Mel Bostwick is a partner of the firm's Supreme Court and Appellate practice. Her practice focuses on high-stakes appeals, with a particular emphasis on patent appeals before the Federal Circuit.

Mel’s practice capitalizes on two of her passions: technology and great writing. As an appellate lawyer, she has the opportunity to help companies protect their innovations and their intellectual property. She is adept at translating complex technology and intricate legal issues into a clear and simple presentation that judges of any background can understand. Mel brings these skills to bear in representing clients on appeal to the Federal Circuit and before the Supreme Court, and also in partnering with trial teams to address legal and strategic problems in district court, the ITC, and the PTAB. She also regularly advises technology clients on difficult IP and strategic issues facing their companies.

Mel also has the privilege of representing pro bono clients and is particularly passionate about using her Federal Circuit experience to help veterans in their appeals to the court.

Prior to joining Orrick, Mel was an associate at a litigation boutique in Washington, D.C., where she represented clients in trial and appellate litigation and before the Federal Communications Commission. Mel served as a law clerk to Judge Timothy B. Dyk of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and Judge Thomas B. Griffith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Bill W. Bothwell Senior Counsel Public Finance, Tax

Bill Bothwell, a partner in Orrick's Los Angeles office, is a member of the firm's Public Finance Department.

Bill was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1980 and the California Bar in 1984. He has practiced in the area of public finance his entire career, initially with a major public finance firm in Colorado, and since 1984 with Orrick. Bill has served as bond counsel, disclosure counsel and underwriter's counsel in numerous tax-exempt financings. He has a broad range of expertise, which includes substantial experience in both traditional enterprise and general fund financings for various types of public entities, including cities, counties and districts, as well as private activity financings for housing and non-profit corporations. In addition, he has devoted substantial time to structuring and analyzing the tax aspects of such financings.    

Bill also frequently speaks and writes on matters related to public finance, develops new financial products and drafts legislation which has been enacted in several states to facilitate borrowing by public entities for a wide variety of projects and programs.

Lena Boucon is a Competition lawyer in Orrick's Paris office.

Lena's practice focuses on all aspects of French and EU competition law, including both transactional and litigation cases: merger control, antitrust, and state aid. She has worked on cases involving various sectors, including retail, energy, and financial services.

Lena also focuses on EU internal market law (fundamental freedoms and regulatory aspects), which was the subject of her doctoral thesis.

Prior to joining Orrick, Lena was an associate with Allen & Overy's Paris office. She previously interned with the competition department of Clifford Chance (Paris office), and with the legal service of the European Commission.
