Martin Ellie is a Competition lawyer in Orrick's Paris office.
Martin’s practice focuses on all aspects of French and EU competition law, including both transactional and litigation cases: merger control, antitrust, and state aid. He also specializes in distribution and consumer law.
Before joining Orrick as an associate, Martin was a legal intern in the Competition department at Weil, Gotshal & Manges and at Orrick. He was also a legal intern at different firms including LVMH and Société Générale, at different corporate boutique law firms in France and Singapore, and in a Commercial Court.
Ray Ellis, a partner in the San Francisco office, is a member of the Tax Group. One of California’s leading authorities on estate planning and leader of Orrick’s Private Wealth Group, Ray has concentrated in the areas of trusts, estate and gift tax and generation-skipping tax planning for 30 years.
He often represents families owning substantial interests in closely held and publicly traded corporations, advising on matters ranging from family partnerships, limited liability companies and S corporations to private foundations, charitable trusts, and arrangements for the transfer of wealth to succeeding generations.
Siegfried H. Elsing, based in Orrick's Düsseldorf office, is a globally recognized international arbitration lawyer with more than 30 years experience acting as counsel, party-appointed arbitrator, sole arbitrator or chairman. He represents private investors, international companies, sovereign states and state agencies on a national and international level.
Siegfried has acted in more than 250 arbitrations, including ad hoc proceedings as well as arbitral proceedings under the rules of leading arbitral institutions such as DIS, HCCI, HKIAC, ICC, ICSID, SCC, VIAC and others. From 2011 to September 2017, he served on the Panel of Conciliators for the Administrative Council of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
Siegfried's experience extends in particular to complex disputes involving M&A and corporate transactions, investment protection, energy law, infrastructure disputes, financing arrangements, insurances, joint ventures, distributorship agreements and IP disputes. He also advises on transactional matters, financing, licensing, construction, joint ventures and M&A transactions.
He is dual qualified, admitted in both Germany and New York, and is fluent in German, English and French. He has appeared as a legal expert witness in the German, U.S. and UK courts (on German law matters) and before other foreign law-making institutions.
Market commentary in Chambers Global 2017 states "the outstanding" Siegfried Elsing "is a leading German arbitrator who receives many international appointments" and he is lauded for his "excellent diplomatic abilities" in Chambers Europe 2016.
Siegfried's experience as arbitrator gives him the perspective of the decision-makers, which he can apply when acting as counsel. He takes a pragmatic approach.
Siegfried co-founded German law firm Hölters & Elsing in 1989 and oversaw the firm's merger with Orrick in 2008.
In 2013 Siegfried was selected to serve as Honorary Consul of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Joshua Emmett, an associate in Orrick's New York office, is a member of the Tax Group.
Josh focuses his practice on a broad range of federal income tax matters, with an emphasis on renewable energy investment and energy tax credits. He has represented both lenders and borrowers in various financing transactions, and also sponsors in renewable energy transactions.
Carsten Engelings is an associate in the Düsseldorf Office and a member of the practice group tax.
Carsten advises on all sorts of German tax and accounting issues arising for industry clients, financial institutions and private equity funds. Mainly focusing on corporate and real estate transactions and restructurings. He also advises and represents clients with respect to tax field audits and in tax litigation against the fiscal administration and before German fiscal and civil courts. Prior to joining Orrick Carsten completed his legal traineeship in both national and international law firms.
Julianne, a Managing Associate in Orrick’s New York office, is a member of the firm's M&A and Private Equity Group.Julianne advises public and private technology, energy and life sciences companies and private investment funds and their portfolio companies in a broad range of strategic transactions, including debt and equity investments, acquisitions and dispositions and other complex transactions. Julianne also counsels domestic and international issuers in public offerings of equity securities and SEC compliance matters.
Alison JW Epperson is a member of the firm's White Collar, Investigations, Securities Litigation & Compliance group in the New York office.
Alison's practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, global investigations across a broad range of industries, and developing anti-corruption compliance programs.
In addition, Alison has experience with the firm's Structured Finance group, specifically on asset-backed securities transactions, including PACE lien securitizations. She has also worked with Orrick's Public Policy group, helping with various multi-state campaigns.
Alison remains committed to serving her community through pro bono representation and has experience in asylum matters, death penalty cases, and a range of other constitutional issues.
Prior to joining Orrick, Alison graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Law. In addition, while pursuing her undergraduate degree from Centre College, Alison worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., specifically in the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee.
In 2016, Alison co-founded the non-profit, CTE Hope, an organization dedicated to addressing the issues and research of traumatic brain injures and chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

Gisele Esteves Guedes is an M&A and Private equity lawyer in Orrick’s Paris office.
Gisele helps startups and high growth technology companies successfully raise capital and build their businesses from formation through exit. She has significant M&A expertise following her years as a private equity, mergers and acquisitions and commercial agreements lawyer in Brazil.
Gisele has represented early and late stage companies in venture financings in France and has advised clients in M&A transactions in Brazil.
Before joining Orrick, Gisele worked at Lobo de Rizzo Advogados, BMA Advogados and L. O. Baptista Advogados in São Paulo, Brazil.
Shawn is an associate in the General Litigation group of Orrick's San Francisco office.Shawn's practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, government investigations, and anti-corruption compliance. She has particular experience with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, including conducting internal investigations and representing companies and individuals in FCPA investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission. She has also worked with companies to develop and enhance their corporate compliance programs.
Rebecca Evans is an Associate in the Complex Litigation and Dispute Resolution Team. Rebecca advises on a wide range of litigation and dispute resolution matters including High Court litigation, professional discipline actions and internal and regulatory investigations.
Rebecca joined Orrick as a trainee in August 2014 and also has experience working in the Competition, Real Estate, Corporate and Energy groups.
John Ewald is a trial lawyer with a particular emphasis on mass torts and product liability.
John plays a critical role in Orrick’s ongoing representation of Johnson & Johnson as national coordinating counsel in lawsuits alleging that the company's talcum powder products causes mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. John serves as trial counsel in those cases and also is responsible for developing and coordinating the company's national scientific and medical defense.
In October 2019, John
served as lead trial counsel for Johnson & Johnson in a suit seeking at
least $25 million that alleged the company’s talc products caused the
plaintiff’s mesothelioma. After a
five-week trial, a Los Angeles state court jury rejected all of plaintiffs’ claims and
returned a complete defense verdict for Johnson & Johnson.
John was also trial counsel in November 2018 for Johnson & Johnson in South Carolina state court where a jury reached a second mistrial in a case that sought $63 million in compensatory damages against the company for allegedly causing the plaintiff's fatal mesothelioma. Law360 cited the case as one of the “Top Product Liability cases of 2018.”
John was recognized in The Legal 500 United States for Product Liability, Mass Tort and Class Action: Toxic Tort - Defense in 2018–2019. John was also recognized by New York Super Lawyers as a “Rising Star” from 2013 to 2019 for class action and mass torts.
John actively participates in Orrick's pro bono program. He received the 2010 Orrick Pro Bono Award for significant pro bono contributions, including his representation of a Guantanamo Bay detainee before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. As counsel of record, John drafted the briefs and argued the case in the D.C. Circuit. Awad v. Obama, 608 F.3d 1 (D.C. Cir. 2010).
Before joining Orrick as an associate, he was a summer associate in the New York office in 2002.
