Chris is a first chair trial lawyer with more than 25 years of experience handling high stakes, precedent-setting cases, particularly in the products liability arena. He has had years where clients asked him to serve as trial counsel for five or more products cases, and his current products liability engagements include leading a cross-office team in defending multiple Chinese companies in an MDL and serving as trial counsel for a large talc company.
Chris also has acted as national counsel for companies facing thousands of mass tort product liability claims and complex, multiparty class action litigation, and has counseled multinational companies entangled in lengthy, enterprise-threatening litigation and negotiated legal and business solutions involving billions of dollars. He has extensive experience in complex and commercial litigation, ranging from insurance recovery disputes to trade secrets issues, and has significant experience in assisting foreign aerospace companies with international arbitration disputes with first-tier aircraft manufacturers.
Earlier in his career, Chris represented large public companies in mergers, acquisitions, strategic investments and private financings; private companies in initial public offerings; and emerging growth companies in general corporate matters. Chris' transactional experience also offers clients a unique perspective on risk mitigation strategies to avoid costly litigation in the future.
Chris is the Chair of Orrick’s Risk Management Committee and acts as the President of a captive insurance company owned by Orrick and a number of other law firms. Prior to joining the firm, Chris was a partner at Clifford Chance and a partner at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, where he was a member of the Policy Committee, a member of the Executive Committee, Chair of the Risk Management Committee and Chair of the Hiring Committee.
Dr. Stefan Weinheimer, a partner in Orrick's Düsseldorf office, is a member of the European Corporate Group. Stefan's practice focuses on advice in respect of M&A, Corporate and Private Equity.
Stefan has been part of Orrick since 2004. Before that he was a partner with a German and with a major London law firm.
Shinsuke Yakura is the Office Leader of Orrick's Tokyo office and a member of the Complex Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group. He is an expert in handling cross-border litigation, arbitration, intellectual property and compliance matters.
His practice focuses on intellectual property, antitrust, product liability, medical and pharmaceutical, and other commercial disputes for both domestic and foreign companies. He actively engages in cross-border litigation and arbitration, and draws on his extensive knowledge and experience from various countries.
In regards to intellectual property, Shinsuke has represented numerous companies in patent infringement litigation involving a wide range of technologies related to electric devices and industrial machinery. He has also handled other IP-related issues such as trademark, copyright and right to publicity. He is a qualified patent attorney (Benrishi) in Japan.
Recently, he has been involved in business and legal issues related to artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and big data; he also acts as the Asia representative of Orrick’s Global AI Working Group.
Consistently providing strategic advice from a global perspective, he is also actively involved in bribery regulations including FCPA and UKBA, antitrust and competition law, cartel, fraud and compliance investigations.
He also advises in mergers and acquisitions, licensing and other transactional matters.
Agatha Yu, an associate in Orrick’s Hong Kong office, is a member of the Litigation Group.
Agatha regularly advises multinationals and financial institutions on a broad range of business disputes in relation to cross-border fraud and asset tracing claims, product liability, as well as employment law and data privacy law matters. She has experience in conducting corporate internal investigations related to activities in China.
In addition to her focus on complex commercial litigation and corporate investigations, she represents global private equity/venture capital funds and portfolio companies in their investments and acquisitions across the Greater China region.
