Avery Cartwright Associate

Los Angeles

Avery has experience assisting with various aspects of litigation, including pre-litigation engagement, legal research and analysis, motion practice, and discovery disputes. With a background in biomedical engineering, she provides expertise in matters involving a wide range of technologies, from life sciences to computer programming.

Avery graduated cum laude from the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. While at ASU Law, she served as the President of the Intellectual Property Students' Association, Co-Chaired an ASU Law Event hosting United States Patent and Trademark Office Director Kathi Vidal and several Patent Trial and Appeal Board judges, and was a Fellow at The McCarthy Institute, ASU Law's premier Intellectual Property research organization. She also served as a Limited Recognition Practitioner in the Lisa Foundation Patent Law Clinic, in which she provided supervised legal services, representing pro bono clients before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She obtained her B.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Arizona State University, where she earned the Moeur Award for achieving a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 4.0.

Prior to joining Orrick, Avery served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable James A. Teilborg in the United States District Court, District of Arizona. In that role, she addressed complex legal issues in numerous areas of law, including patent litigation, employment disputes, civil rights actions, and administrative law. From this experience, Avery developed valuable skills in legal writing and in handling all stages of litigation, from the motion to dismiss stage through to trial.

David Chang Managing Associate

Los Angeles

David’s practice focuses on complex copyright and trademark matters in retail, entertainment, and media adjacent spaces. He also possesses multiple years of experience litigating tech-based trade secret and patent infringement issues involving software programs, computer hardware, digital communication systems, and medical devices.

Prior to joining Orrick, David served as a law clerk for the Honorable Otis D. Wright, II in the Central District of California as well as for the Honorable Liam P. Hardy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Between federal clerkships, David worked at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in their IP litigation practice group where he engaged in all stages of litigation on behalf of various Fortune 50 companies.

In addition to his civilian career, David previously served as an Infantry Officer and continues to serve part-time as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army National Guard.

David is also passionate about serving his larger community and has an active pro bono practice focusing on civil litigation, veteran assistance, and refugee legal aid.

Annie H Chen Senior Associate

Annie has experience in all facets of litigation, including factual investigations, preparing witnesses for depositions, taking depositions, and pretrial briefing and motion practice.  She also advises clients regarding compliance with employment laws, including revising employee handbook provisions and employee commission agreements, leave of absence issues, requests for accommodations and employee terminations.

Adrianne Davies Associate

Her practice focuses on project finance transactions in the energy and infrastructure sectors, with a focus on renewable energy.

Blake Dewveall Associate

He advises lenders and corporate borrowers in a wide range of secured lending facilities and commercial financing transactions.

Blake was a summer associate in the firm's Los Angeles office in 2022.

Lauren Drake Partner

Los Angeles

Lauren has represented clients in connection with a broad spectrum of technologies, including small molecules, biologics, DNA sequencing, gene editing, recombinant DNA technology, and medical devices. She brings experience in litigation under the Hatch-Waxman Act and the Biologics Price Competition Innovation Act (BPCIA).

Lauren was recognized by Law360’s Rising Stars as “one of the top intellectual property attorneys under the age of 40” in 2019. She was also named to Benchmark Litigation’s “40 and Under Hot List,” which honors the achievements of the nation’s most accomplished litigators under 40.

James Duff Of Counsel

Los Angeles

Beginning in 2006, James has advised clients on a variety of asset-backed securities, including residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS), re-securitizations of RMBS and collateralized debt obligations, and charter school receivable-backed securities. He has also represented municipal and state agencies for municipal bond transactions.

During the financial crisis, James advised clients on mortgage loan modifications, and advised municipal and state agencies on interest rate mode changes and bond refinancings.

Recently, James has worked on a number of RMBS and CMBS transactions.  

James is an avid triathlete and winner of a number triathlons, including the 2016 North Carolina Ironman.

Deena O. Dulgerian Senior Associate

Los Angeles

Deena works on matters for a diverse range of clients, from international tech and utility construction companies, and pharmaceutical companies to the National Collegiate Athletic Association. From day one, she was an integral member of the winning trial team for the first collegiate football concussion and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy case to reach a jury trial for the NCAA, as well as managing the discovery process for several other of the NCAA’s football concussion cases. She is also active in multi-language international arbitration matters, working with clients and experts across the globe.

Recently, Deena has represented a number of technology companies, working on matters involving cryptocurrency investments and international service issues, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and other copyright and data access issues, and disputes related to disgruntled employees and stock options.

Deena has consistently maintained an active pro bono case load, having secured asylum for six individuals in the last three years. She currently represents an inmate through the the United States District Court for the Central District of California’s Pro Bono Civil Rights Panel and represented a tenant in an eviction action alongside Public Counsel.

Deena is a respected leader at Orrick. Since joining the firm, she has served as Co-Chair of the Middle Eastern and North African inclusion network and Co-Chair of the Los Angeles Office’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee for several years, currently sits on the firmwide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and was a featured speaker for Kōrero, Orrick’s Women’s Initiative’s monthly firmwide community conversations. In 2022, Deena received the firm’s Community Responsibility Award for her humanitarian work with the Armenian Bar Association in connection with the war by Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabagh.

Deena is an active member of the Armenian community, serving as Co-Vice Chair of the Armenian Woman’s Bar Association. While in law school, Deena was the Co-Founder and President of the Armenian Law Students Association. She was also a member of Georgetown’s Barrister’s Council’s Alternate Dispute Resolution division, winning Georgetown’s Bellamy Negotiation Competition and securing an honorable mention for Georgetown’s brief at the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong, a student attorney with Georgetown's Juvenile Justice Clinic, the Executive Editor for the Georgetown Journal on Poverty Law and Policy, and wrote for the Georgetown Law Technology Review.

Andrew Erskine Partner

Prior to joining Orrick, Andrew served as a legislative adviser to Congress, a lobbyist for the University of Illinois, and a tax fellow for Deloitte advising companies on Sarbanes-Oxley tax compliance and building internal control systems.

Nick earned his J.D. from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review and received the Otto Kaus Award for Excellence in Legal Scholarship.

Before law school, he built a career as a journalist, photographer, and publicist covering music, food, and the arts. A proud Husky, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington.

Donald Field Partner

He is also a member of Orrick's Leasing Practice Group, Assessment/Mello-Roos Practice Group, and Revenue Practice Group. Don has extensive experience, as bond counsel, disclosure counsel and underwriter's counsel, in the financing techniques used by school and community college districts, cities and counties in California. His practice focuses on local governmental infrastructure financing, including general obligation bond financing, municipal lease financing, and land-secured financing, as well as tax and revenue anticipation note (TRAN), pension obligation and other post-employment benefit (OPEB) obligation financings. Don serves as the lead lawyer for the California School Boards Association's annual tax and revenue anticipation note pool. 

David Fuad Partner

From health and safety mass tort litigation for the NCAA, to complex, multimillion-dollar international breach of contract claims and countersuits for a global television manufacturer, to high-stakes, precedent-setting employment victories for Oracle, David handles a range of commercial disputes. David was named a “Litigator of the Week” by American Lawyer for achieving a complete defense verdict in a precedent-setting jury trial, and has been named a “Litigator of the Week” Runner-Up twice for securing defense verdicts, including in a $100 million negligence action. In addition to these recognitions from American Lawyer, David was also named to The Recorder's list of Lawyers on the Fast Track in California.

Not all disputes end up in court. David leverages his extensive courtroom and alternative dispute resolution knowledge to provide invaluable risk mitigation counseling to both established and emerging companies. David serves as a business partner and trusted advisor to ambitious start-ups and high-growth companies—helping these innovative clients see around corners to avoid or reduce potential exposures.

In addition to his legal practice, David is committed to challenging inequities through his pro bono work. For Equal Justice Under Law, he helped secure a favorable judgment in a federal civil rights class action, barring indigent criminal defendants unable to pay court-imposed fines and fees from being jailed in a system that was described as a “modern-day debtors’ prison.”

While attending law school, David served as an extern for two Los Angeles Superior Court judges and was a member of the Loyola Entertainment Law Review.
