Ryann Rae McMurry Managing Associate

Ryann's practice focuses on representing foreign and domestic individuals and companies in a broad range of industries in anti-corruption compliance, government investigations, and white collar criminal defense matters. Her experiences include conducting internal investigations and representing companies in investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission and working with companies to develop and enhance their corporate compliance programs. She also represents clients in matters involving complex civil and criminal litigation matters. Ryann joined Orrick after completing a one-year fellowship as an Orrick Fellow at ACLU of Northern California.

David R. Medina Senior Associate

David develops strategies to protect his client’s bold innovations, whether assisting one of the world's leading technology companies, or a mobile gaming start-up. He offers intellectual property counseling and litigation, including patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret matters.

Before joining Orrick, David served as a law clerk to the Honorable Nora Barry Fischer in the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Prior to his clerkship, David served as a full-time extern to the Honorable Kathleen O'Malley at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

David also spent a year working in-house for Panasonic Corporation, stationed near Panasonic's Osaka, Japan headquarters.

Rudi Miller Associate, Currently on client secondment

Rudi has experience representing large commercial clients in complex and high-value litigation in federal and state courts across the country. She has advised clients in all stages of litigation from receipt of pre-litigation demands through discovery, expert work, summary judgment, trial preparation, and trial. In her pro bono practice, Rudi has provided services to ICE detainees and low-income veterans. 

Emily Minton Mattson Managing Associate

Before joining Orrick, Emily was an associate at Hueston Hennigan LLP, where she gained experience in all stages of the litigation process, including pre-complaint investigation, pleadings, discovery, summary judgment, trial, and appeals in both federal and state courts. Emily clerked for the Honorable Dana M. Sabraw of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California and the Honorable Milan D. Smith Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Emily attended University of Michigan Law School, where she received the Henry M. Bates Memorial Scholarship Award (Michigan Law’s highest honor). Emily served as a Senior Editor of the Michigan Law Review, a research assistant for Professors Richard Primus and Don Herzog, and a member of the Campbell Moot Court Board.

Shahin Mohammadi Managing Associate

Shahin represents sponsors, investors and other market participants in a wide range of renewable energy transactions. His practice encompasses project development, acquisitions and tax equity and debt financings. He also assists clients with general corporate legal needs.

Geoffrey Moss Partner

Los Angeles

As a member of Orrick’s Intellectual Property group, Geoff represents clients big and small through all stages of litigation, from pre-suit investigations through trial and appeals. Geoff was a member of the trial team and lead technology associate in Oracle v. Google, the long-running and high stakes lawsuit over Google’s use of Oracle’s Java APIs in the Android operating system. Geoff also has significant experience representing clients in a variety of commercial, employment, and products liability lawsuits.

Before attending law school, Geoff worked as a software developer at The Capital Group Companies, Raytheon, and the Teradata division of NCR.

Geoff spends significant time working on pro bono matters, notably with the Domestic Violence Project through the Los Angeles County Bar Association. The Project helps those in need navigate a complicated legal system in their time of need to get the restraining orders they need to stay safe.

Natalie Nahabet Senior Associate

Los Angeles

Natalie is a true client advocate who appreciates a client’s needs and reputational concerns involved in high-stakes litigation. Her areas of focus include technology litigation, mass torts and product liability, complex breach of contract, and consumer class actions including Proposition 65 and the Consumer Legal Remedies Act. She has helped numerous clients by developing innovative and effective strategies to resolve cases. Natalie served as first chair in an arbitration where she successfully defended Microsoft in a matter involving the permanent suspension of a Skype user claiming millions in damages. Additionally, Natalie recently obtained a favorable result for Microsoft in a separate arbitration where the team creatively set forth a defense under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

Natalie’s representation of clients in the mass tort and product liability space involves clients with significant potential damages, multiple jurisdictions and plaintiffs, and high risk to critical product lines. In most of these cases, in addition to serving as a key trial team player, Natalie serves as the point person for expert development and discovery. With her experience, she has created highly efficient and effective methods to analyze and synthesize the key facts in complex matters and use expert opinions and testimony to develop compelling stories for her clients in the courtroom. Most recently, Natalie was part of a trial team that obtained a complete defense verdict for the NCAA in a case brought by a former University of Oregon football player who was seeking $100 million in punitive damages.

Other notable engagements include:

• Represented the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in concussion/CTE and injury-related litigation across the United States. In the span of less than 10 months across 2022 and 2023, Natalie was a key member of the team on three separate high-profile jury trial wins for the NCAA - including the first to take on claims the NCAA is responsible for concussions and CTE in college football. This victory was recognized as the Courtroom View Network’s Most Impressive Defense Verdict of 2022 and the Daily Journal’s Defense Verdict of the Year, as well as by American Lawyer Litigators of the Week. Natalie’s work for the NCAA has also led to five separate plaintiffs voluntarily dismissing their claims against the NCAA.
• Obtained a complete victory for Microsoft and one of its employees with a ruling granting their motion for judgment on the pleadings without leave to amend in a trade secret misappropriation lawsuit against Cheap Stuff.
• Successfully defended Microsoft in a consumer arbitration relating to services provided via the Microsoft Help Desk.
• Successfully assisted clients in resolving Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) cases by serial litigators pre-litigation or at the early stages of a suit. Natalie also regularly publishes on this topic.
• Represented Tanium, a cybersecurity and systems-management company, in an insurance coverage lawsuit brought by Zurich American Insurance Company seeking to recoup amounts previously paid toward an underlying settlement.
• Represented Johnson & Johnson as trial counsel and national coordinating counsel in product liability cases alleging that asbestos contamination in Johnson's Baby Powder caused mesothelioma.
• Successfully defended Johnson & Johnson in two putative class actions, one in the Southern District of California, and the other in the complex court of the Los Angeles Superior Court, which alleged unfair competition, Proposition 65 and CLRA violations.
• Served as national coordinating counsel to Union Carbide Corporation (a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company) in connection with its ongoing asbestos-related product liability litigation. Natalie led the development and coordination of national strategy, with a particular focus on scientific and expert related issues.
• Acting as a member of the Orrick cross-office team in the defense of Chinese companies and their products against American consumer claims.
• Successfully briefed a motion for summary judgment for Natixis Wealth Management.
• Represented a multinational banking and financial services corporation relating to third party subpoenas and levies.
• Represented a Fortune 500 company in an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission into compliance with Bank Secrecy Act reporting requirements.
• Represented a municipal official in connection with an SEC enforcement action in federal court. After hard-fought litigation, the SEC agreed to voluntarily dismiss its claim against the official.
• Obtained a complete defense victory at arbitration for a major Los Angeles-based clothing manufacturer in a business dispute with its former designer.
• Settled heavily contested breach of contract claims and counterclaims involving an exclusive distributorship agreement for a premier traffic signal manufacturer.
• Successfully resolved an employment discrimination suit on behalf of a manufacturer employer.

Natalie is also active in pro bono matters including representing victims of domestic violence.

While attending UCLA School of Law, Natalie served as an extern for two U.S. Bankruptcy Court (Central District of California) judges, was the Production Editor of the Women's Law Journal, President of the Armenian Graduate Students Association and Vice President of the Armenian Law Students Association.

Caleb R. Nissley Managing Associate

Caleb represents issuers, sponsors, placement agents, underwriters, servicers, and other market participants in connection with securitizations, private placements, asset financings, sales, and the negotiation of lending facilities.

He is also active in several pro bono cases involving the Geneva Convention IV’s application to the ongoing Russo-Ukraine war and that of a Ghanan family seeking asylum.

In 2020, Caleb graduated from the University of California, Irvine School of Law. While in law school, Caleb co-authored a brief argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and served as Editor for the UC Irvine Law Review.

Prior to law school, he worked for several years at J.P. Morgan Chase with positions in corporate finance, mortgage banking, credit card operations, and compliance.

William W. Oxley Partner

Bill has a winning record trying cases to verdict in jurisdictions throughout the United States, including products liability, breach of contract, trademark, IP, and business tort cases for global, household-name clients. Bill has also litigated class actions, false advertising, and real estate disputes, and has effectively defended manufacturers and nutritional and health product-related companies against Proposition 65 claims.

Cody Peterson Partner

Cody works with founders at every stage, from early formation to financing rounds, acquisitions, and IPOs. He has a particular focus on first-time founders navigating the complexities of startup life, helping them make informed decisions without getting lost in legal jargon.

Before becoming a lawyer, Cody was the COO of a health and fitness e-commerce startup in Las Vegas. That entrepreneurial experience shaped his approach—he brings a “nothing is impossible” mindset and a deep understanding that legal matters are just one piece of the puzzle for founders. His advice is always practical, actionable, and tailored to the realities of running a fast-moving business.

Cody represents both startups and venture funds across industries including e-commerce, fintech, climatetech, future of work, edtech, life sciences, and biotech. He also leverages Orrick’s deep industry focuses and innovative legal tools to help high-growth companies navigate financings, IPOs, and M&A transactions.

An active member of the LA startup community, Cody regularly mentors and coaches founders, including participants in the Plug In Accelerator, a program supporting Black and Latinx early-stage entrepreneurs.

Cody earned his law degree from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and his bachelor’s degree from Pomona College. Before joining Orrick, he was a partner and co-founder of Gunderson Dettmer’s Los Angeles office.
