Orrick Adds Managing Director to Work with Corporate Legal Departments to Advance Inclusion

Orrick has invested in the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion leadership with the appointment of Duane Hughes as Managing Director of Inclusion & Move The Needle.  Duane will be a member of the firm’s executive leadership team and will be based in New York.  He joins from JP Morgan.

“We have long known Duane as a client and sophisticated thought leader, and more recently through his participation on Orrick’s Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Board,” said Orrick Chairman Mitch Zuklie.  “We know our clients do not want to let diversity slip on the priority list in the midst of this crisis – and neither do we.  So, we felt it was critical to invest in more senior leadership to advance the conversation with our clients, in the community and within our firm.  It’s especially important in today’s uncertain environment that we prioritize investment in this transformation, and we are fortunate to add a distinctive talent like Duane, who brings a deep understanding of the client perspective.”

A seasoned lawyer and business leader who has led diversity and inclusion initiatives throughout his career, Duane is well recognized as a champion for diversity.  He moves to Orrick from JP Morgan, where he served as Managing Director and Senior Finance & Business Manager of the Latin American Private Bank for the past two years.  He also served for nearly two decades in senior roles at Morgan Stanley, including COO of International Wealth Management, and founded and chaired the bank’s legal diversity program.

“As I thought about the next phase of my career, I wanted to focus full-time on how we make inclusiveness actionable in our profession,” said Duane.  “In talking with Mitch, Lorraine McGowen and the rest of Orrick’s leadership, I have been inspired by their commitment to innovating and changing the dialogue between the law firm and the corporate legal department.  I’m confident Orrick will be a wonderful platform to make progress and develop best practices that I hope will be valuable throughout the industry.”

Duane will collaborate with Orrick’s Co-Chair for Diversity & Inclusion Lorraine McGowen in driving the firm’s participation in the Move The Needle Fund, of which Orrick is a founding firm.  The Move the Needle Fund, which was launched last fall, is a 5-year, $5 million collaboration with the Diversity Lab, 25+ corporate legal departments and four peer firms to develop innovative solutions to make progress on diversity and inclusion in the profession.  Orrick’s Move The Needle goal entails working directly with the firm’s clients to enhance the diversity of client teams and client relationship leadership in parallel with the increasing diversity of the firm.  He will also help the firm attract top talent.

The New York City Bar has named Duane a Diversity Champion, and he was Metropolitan Black Bar Association’s Corporate Counsel of the Year.  He began his career as a lawyer with Simpson Thacher and Shearman & Sterling.

Duane adds to our diversity leadership team that includes Lorraine and Darren Teshima (D&I), Sheryl Garko (Women’s Initiative), Patricia Eichar (LGBTQ+ Initiative) and Angelique Magliulo-Hager (Director of Diverse Talent and Firmwide Training).
