E. Patrick Ellisen, a California Intellectual Property lawyer, focuses his practice on intellectual property protection, counseling and enforcement. Pat has wide-ranging experience in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret matters. He has deep experience handling various types of intellectual property disputes, including patent infringement actions in the U.S. District Courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission.
Pat regularly advises clients on intellectual property strategies and systems, negotiates and litigates intellectual property license agreements, and has unique experience in insurance coverage of intellectual property disputes. In addition, he is a frequent lecturer on intellectual property management and best practices.
Prior to joining the firm, Pat was a shareholder at Greenberg Traurig. Prior to that, he was the firmwide chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group at a Minneapolis-based multidisciplinary firm.
Siegfried H. Elsing, based in Orrick's Düsseldorf office, is a globally recognized international arbitration lawyer with more than 30 years experience acting as counsel, party-appointed arbitrator, sole arbitrator or chairman. He represents private investors, international companies, sovereign states and state agencies on a national and international level.
Siegfried has acted in more than 230 arbitrations, including ad hoc proceedings as well as arbitral proceedings under the rules of leading arbitral institutions such as DIS, HCCI, HKIAC, ICC, ICSID, SCC, VIAC and others. From 2011 to September 2017, he served on the Panel of Conciliators for the Administrative Council of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
Siegfried's experience extends in particular to complex disputes involving M&A and corporate transactions, investment protection, energy law, infrastructure disputes, financing arrangements, insurances, joint ventures, distributorship agreements and IP disputes. He also advises on transactional matters, financing, licensing, construction, joint ventures and M&A transactions.
He is dual qualified, admitted in both Germany and New York, and is fluent in German, English and French. He has appeared as a legal expert witness in the German, U.S. and UK courts (on German law matters) and before other foreign law-making institutions.
Market commentary in Chambers Global 2017 states "the outstanding" Siegfried Elsing "is a leading German arbitrator who receives many international appointments" and he is lauded for his "excellent diplomatic abilities" in Chambers Europe 2016.
Siegfried's experience as arbitrator gives him the perspective of the decision-makers, which he can apply when acting as counsel. He takes a pragmatic approach.
Siegfried co-founded German law firm Hölters & Elsing in 1989 and oversaw the firm's merger with Orrick in 2008.
In 2013 Siegfried was selected to serve as Honorary Consul of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

John Ewald is a Complex Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group partner in the New York office and a member of the firm's Mass Torts and Product Liability practice. John represents clients in all phases of complex multi-party, consolidated, and class action litigation, and has handled significant actions involving the chemical, vaccine and prescription drug industries.
John actively participates in Orrick's pro bono program. He received the 2010 Orrick Pro Bono Award for significant pro bono contributions, including his representation of a Guantanamo Bay detainee before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. As counsel of record, Mr. Ewald drafted the briefs and argued the case in the D.C. Circuit. Awad v. Obama, 608 F.3d 1 (D.C. Cir. 2010).
Before joining Orrick as an associate, he was a summer associate in the New York office in 2002.
