Alyssa Barnard-Yanni specializes in briefing on high-stakes issues in state and federal courts at both the trial and appellate level.
Alyssa represents clients in a wide range of subject areas, including white collar defense and complex commercial litigation. She has been the principal drafter of successful motions seeking summary judgment and the exclusion of key expert testimony. She has also collaborated on a motion to dismiss an indictment and criminal discovery motions in the Southern District of New York, as well as civil appeals in the Fifth Circuit and New York Appellate Division, and argued a half-dozen motions in state trial court in a multi-billion dollar products liability action.
Alyssa maintains an active pro bono practice focusing primarily on criminal law matters. She recently argued before the New York Appellate Division on behalf of a defendant appealing his conviction due to ineffective assistance of counsel.
Before joining Orrick, Alyssa served as a law clerk to Judge Alison J. Nathan on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and Judge Robert A. Katzmann on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She graduated first in her class at Columbia Law School, where she served as the Executive Notes Editor of the Columbia Law Review. Alyssa will be clerking for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the October 2019 Term.
