Kirt Suomela is a scientific advisor for Orrick's Insurance Group. He provides advice and counsel to the group on engineering, environmental and other technical matters, including insurance policy allocation modeling. Mr. Suomela coordinates with lawyers on insurance-related issues, analyzes loss causation in first-party property damage matters, and has developed, priced and presented damage assessments and remediation systems. His work includes managing technical experts on behalf of policyholders, and conducting opposition research on the technical experts of insurance companies.
Mr. Suomela's expertise stems from his long history as an engineer specializing in environmental matters, for both the U.S. government and in the private sector. His work highlights include analyzing federal regulations regarding radioactive waste management at the Nevada Test Site, performing feasibility studies on groundwater remedial alternatives at U.S. Navy sites, and acting as the EPA's oversight engineer at the country's largest non-Federal Superfund site.
Prior to working at Orrick, Mr. Suomela was a Senior Consulting Engineer and Insurance Allocation Specialist for the Insurance Recovery groups at Swidler Berlin LLP and Heller Ehrman LLP.
