12-08-2009

Beijing – Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP (Orrick) announced that Niping Wu has joined the firm from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.  Ms. Wu joins Orrick as a partner in the firm's corporate group, resident in the Beijing office.  Ms. Wu's practice will continue to focus on M&A and private equity transactions in China.

Ms. Wu received her J.D. from Yale Law School and her undergraduate degree from Yale University, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa and has been practicing in the U.S. and China for over a decade. She counsels both Chinese and international companies throughout Asia on private equity investments, cross-border mergers and acquisitions (including foreign direct investment into China), corporate finance and capital markets transactions.  Ms. Wu is recognized as a leading private equity lawyer in China by leading legal publications, including Chambers Asia.

Ms. Wu's clients include Bank of America, Nokia, TPG, MBK Partners, Asian Direct Capital Management, The Stanley Works, Precision Castparts Corp, Golden State Environmental Group and Watchdata Technologies.

Christopher Stephens, Orrick's Asia Managing Partner, said: "Niping has an outstanding track record both in the U.S. and China. We are thrilled that Niping has joined our China team.  Her expertise and deep experience in the strategically important M&A and private equity areas will enhance the depth and breadth of our team in China and throughout Asia."

Niping Wu added: "I was very impressed with Orrick's dynamic strategy and commitment to China and Asia.  Orrick has a very collaborative and talented team of lawyers on the ground here and a strong and supportive global platform to match.  I am excited to be joining a growing firm with a long-standing presence in China and a tremendous momentum to innovate and move forward."

Ms. Wu speaks Mandarin, Shanghainese and English. She is an active author and speaker, having published several articles and spoken on the development of the Chinese legal and regulatory systems.

Ms. Wu joins Orrick at a time of significant expansion for the firm in China.  Last month, Orrick announced the addition of Phoebus Chu from Paul Hastings, who joined Orrick in Hong Kong and Beijing in November, and Thomas Tobiason who relocated from Silicon Valley to Shanghai in October.  Mr. Chu focuses on capital markets, M&A and corporate work, and Mr. Tobiason advises emerging companies, venture capital firms and investment banks on fund investment, M&A and corporate matters.  "Tom, Phoebus and Niping are remarkably talented lawyers, and adding them to our existing team gives us tremendous on-the-ground depth and capability in China," said Stephens.

Orrick's Greater China team of nearly 70 legal professionals in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai has a 37 year track record in advising Chinese and international clients on domestic and cross-border matters including mergers and acquisitions, foreign direct investment, securities offerings, private equity, investment funds, structured finance, real estate finance and development, project finance, litigation and arbitration, intellectual property, restructuring, competition law.
