John M. Hartenstein

1958–2011

The Orrick community is mourning the tragic loss of our partner and dear friend John M. Hartenstein, who passed away on January 30, 2011.

A public finance lawyer at Orrick for 20 years, John chaired the firm's School Finance and General Obligation Bonds Group. His unwavering commitment to his clients and his consummate expertise made him not only one of the best lawyers at Orrick, but also one of the most highly-regarded lawyers in the industry. He will be greatly missed by all those who worked with him or knew him.

John's particular area of expertise, for which he was second to none, was California election law, voter approved debt and California school and community college districts, focusing on general obligation bonds, "bridge" financings and refundings, parcel tax measures, tax and revenue anticipation notes, and Mello-Roos bonds.

John's advice was regularly sought by public sector associations, legislators and policy makers in addition to clients. His work will be carried on by his colleagues in Orrick's School Finance and General Obligation Bonds Group, particularly Eugene Clark-Herrera, John Palmer and Don Field.

A memorial service was held Saturday, February 5th at The Julia Morgan Center for The Arts at 2640 College Avenue, Berkeley, CA.
