Zheng (Jen) Liu, a managing associate in the Silicon Valley office, is a member of the Intellectual Property Group. Ms. Liu's practice focuses on intellectual property litigation, intellectual property counseling and technology transaction across a broad range of industries, including biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical devices, diagnostics, computer networking and telecommunications. Some of Ms. Liu's recent representations include - Varian Medical Systems, Inc. Ms. Liu is the lead associate of the Orrick team defending this leading radiation therapy equipment company in a patent infringement suit brought by the University of Pittsburgh. This case is pending. Ms. Liu also worked with Varian on various licensing and other litigation matters.
- Logitech, Inc. Ms. Liu is the lead associate of the Orrick team defending this leading consumer electronics company in a patent infringement suit brought by Man Machine Interface Technologies, Inc. This case is pending. Ms. Liu also worked with Logitech on various IP due diligence matters.
- Microsemi Corp. and D-Link Systems Inc. Ms. Liu was the lead associate of the Orrick team defending these companies against Chrimar Systems Inc. in a patent infringement case at Eastern District of Michigan. This case has been settled.
- Acer Inc., Nanya Corp. and Powerchip Corp. Ms. Liu is part of the Orrick team defending these three leading companies against Tessera Inc. at U.S. International Trade Commission in a 337 action.
- Siliconware Precision Industries Co. Ltd. Ms. Liu is part of the Orrick team defending this leading integrated circuit packaging company in patent and licensing disputes brought by Tessera, Inc.
- AOpen America Inc. and AOpen Inc. Ms. Liu is part of a Orrick team defending against a US$30 million contract damages suit. This case has been favorably settled.
Before joining Orrick, Ms. Liu was an associate at a prominent IP litigation boutique firm, where she was a member of the life sciences team advising biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies on patent matters. She was involved in matters for Amgen Inc., Angiotech Pharmaceuticals Inc., Isis Pharmaceutical Inc., Napo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Lily ICOS LLC. Ms. Liu has a Technology Law Certificate and JD from UC Berkeley School of Law, has served on the Executive Committee of the Berkeley Chinese Alumni International Association, and has been involved in promoting mutually beneficial legal and business relationships between the United States and China. Ms. Liu conducted research in anti-viral drug development at Johnson & Johnson between graduate school and law school. She studied Molecular Biology in graduate school and biophysics at the University of Science & Technology of China during her undergraduate years. She has been active on the board of USTC's Alumni Association. Ms. Liu was born and raised in China. She is a native Chinese speaker. She writes articles for Chinese language publications, such as the prestigious Caijing magazine, on issues of U.S. IP law. She regularly lectures to Chinese companies and technology associations on similar issues. She also does pro bono legal work for Chinese-speaking victims of domestic violence.
