James Lin, a senior associate in the Silicon Valley office, is a member of the Intellectual Property Group.  Mr. Lin's practice focuses on complex patent infringement litigation in federal courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission.  He also advises emerging and established technology companies on issues related to the development, evaluation and licensing of intellectual property.  Mr. Lin has substantial experience with various technologies, including computer networking, telecommunications, computer security, computer architecture, semiconductor processing, semiconductor memories, semiconductor integrated circuits, semiconductor packaging, digital multimedia and software.

Some of Mr. Lin's past and current representations include the following.

  • Acer Inc.  Mr. Lin represents Acer in multiple patent infringement disputes in the United States.  For example, Mr. Lin was part of the Orrick team representing Acer in a number of patent infringement disputes with Hewlett-Packard Company before the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.  Mr. Lin is also part of the Orrick team representing Acer in a patent infringement dispute with Tessera, Inc. before the U.S. International Trade Commission.
  • Intel Corporation.  Mr. Lin currently represents Intel in a patent infringement dispute pending in the Northern District of Texas.
  • Ralink Technology Corporation.  Mr. Lin currently represents Ralink in a patent infringement dispute pending in the Eastern District of Texas.
  • Nanya Technology Corporation.  Mr. Lin is part of the Orrick team representing Nanya in a patent infringement dispute brought by Rambus, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging infringement of 18 patents related to DRAM technology.  Mr. Lin is also part of the Orrick team representing Nanya in a patent infringement dispute with Tessera, Inc. before the U.S. International Trade Commission.  Additionally, Mr. Lin provides licensing and general intellectual property counseling for Nanya.
  • Powerchip Semiconductor Corp.  Mr. Lin is part of the Orrick team representing Powerchip in a patent infringement dispute with Tessera, Inc. before the U.S. International Trade Commission.
  • Siliconware Precision Industries Co. Ltd.  Mr. Lin is part of the Orrick team representing Siliconware in patent and licensing disputes brought by Tessera, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
  • Medion AG.  Mr. Lin represented Medion AG in a patent dispute in the Eastern District of Texas.  The case settled favorably.
  • Compal Electronics, Inc.  Mr. Lin was part of the Orrick team representing Compal on patent and indemnity issues.  Compal is one of the largest notebook manufacturers in the world.  The technology relates to AC/DC inverter modules used for LCD displays in notebook computers.
