China Practice

In 2006, Orrick opened its 17th and 18th offices in Beijing and Shanghai, closely following the 2005 opening of our offices in Hong Kong and Taipei. Information about our China Team lawyers, their three decades of pioneering experience in China and the full range of legal services from our local offices is described below and is available in our China Practice brochure (PDF format).

China Team Presence

In 2005, the international law firms of Orrick and Coudert Brothers LLP agreed on the transition to Orrick of nine partners and more than 120 associates, of counsel and staff from Coudert. This represented the substantial portion of Coudert's China practice in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai and was further strengthened with the subsequent transition of Coudert's highly regarded New York-based China practice to Orrick. Coudert Brothers was the first foreign law firm to open an office in Hong Kong (1972), the first foreign law firm to establish a permanent presence in Beijing (1979) and the first foreign law firm to be approved by the Ministry of Justice to establish a law office in China (Beijing, 1992, with the receipt of license no. 001). Coudert was also one of the first foreign law firms to open an office in Shanghai (2001). Orrick's China Team lawyers are considered to be the founders, creators and counselors of precedent-setting developments in business, finance and law in China.

In 2006 and 2007, Orrick also expanded its lead in the Capital Markets, Intellectual Property, Structured Finance and Litigation/Dispute Resolution practices with the addition of partners, associates, of counsel and staff in each of these areas. Partner Dr. Xiang Wang, formerly co-head of Jones Day's Mainland China Intellectual Property practice, joined our Beijing office to lead Orrick's China Intellectual Property practice. Michelle Taylor, one of the few practitioners in the Asia-Pacific region who is focused on structured finance, joined Orrick's Hong Kong office as the partner leading our pan-Asian Structured Finance practice. Partner Edwin Luk, a leading China-focused securities and corporate finance lawyer, joined the corporate practice in our Hong Kong office. Robert Pé, formerly head of Paul Hastings' Hong Kong litigation practice, joined Orrick as a lead partner in our China Team Litigation/Dispute Resolution practice.

Elizabeth Cole, formerly managing partner of Deacons' Shanghai office, joined Orrick's Shanghai office, bringing extensive cross-border corporate transactions and mergers and acquisitions experience. Orrick has strengthened its Korea group through the appointment of a former member of Debevoise & Plimpton's M&A and securities groups and Korean law specialist Mark Lee, who joined Orrick's Hong Kong office as a partner in the Corporate Group. David Lin, a leading China-focused capital markets, private equity and corporate finance lawyer, joined Orrick's Hong Kong office as a partner in the firm's Corporate Group.
