Vinay joined Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe as a trainee in September 2007. |
Orrick stands out for its collegiate and supportive working environment. This is essential when considering the responsibility trainees can be given right from the outset. The partners and associates will expect your final work product to be of a very high standard, and it is common for your work to be sent directly to the client. During my seat in litigation, I was often asked to advise clients direct, with the partner discussing matters with me but letting me draft shorter emails and letters without direct supervision. I was involved in a wide range of matters, including:
- assisting in advising a Dutch energy company on the options and remedies available in a dispute under a Joint Venture Agreement for the development of wind farm projects in Spain;
- conducting my own court hearing on behalf of a major Registered Social Landlord in front of a District Judge;
- outlining the essential elements of UK Trade Mark infringement law for a major international domestic products manufacturer;
- drafting a memorandum to Orrick's New York Office highlighting issues relating to registration of foreign companies in the UK.
There are great benefits in working in small teams, and I particularly enjoyed working closely with a partner and an associate on drafting a Statement of Case where the clients were suing a sovereign state for breach of its Investment Treaty obligations. There are many lawyers at the firm that are regarded as leaders in their respective fields, and the close contact with such lawyers aids trainee development and progression.
The office is growing, with numerous lateral hires at all levels joining us from other City firms. There is a sense of excitement in being part of a firm that is expanding and making a big impact on the City, and it is rewarding to feel that your contribution is helping the firm achieve its long-term objectives.
