Derek joined Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe as a trainee in September 2006.

I have been very impressed by the friendly and supportive atmosphere at Orrick. This makes the London office an interesting and enjoyable place to work as a trainee.

In the small(-ish) office of a prominent global firm, we are relied upon to make an early contribution to the international work of the office. This can be a challenge, but it provides excellent experience and lays firm foundations for a career as a qualified solicitor.

During my first seat, in Finance, I focused on structured finance work. This is a complex, fast-moving and acronym-heavy field where Orrick is a world leader. The LPC didn't provide any preparation for working with SIVs, CLOs and IBLOR, so the formal and informal instruction I have been given has been very helpful. Despite the strict deadlines faced by the lawyers in the department working on cross-border deals everyone was courteous and pleasant, and made a point of thanking me for my assistance.

In addition to the people and the work, the view from the 34th floor above the City is also outstanding!
