Three Orrick Lawyers Named to Daily Journal 100

September.11.2013

The Daily Journal has named three Orrick partners to its list of the top 100 lawyers in California:  Annette Hurst in our Intellectual Property Group in San Francisco, Marc Levinson in our Restructuring Group in Sacramento, Steve Venuto in our Emerging Companies Group in Silicon Valley. This annual list recognizes the leading California lawyers across all disciplines.

Ms. Hurst is honored for her work on two of the highest profile IP cases of the past year: representing Dish Networks in a copyright dispute with several major broadcast networks over the company’s advanced DVR recording and ad-skipping features known as Primetime Anytime and AutoHop, and as co-counsel in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley and Sons, Inc. which addressed the question of whether the so-called “first-sale” doctrine applies to goods manufactured abroad.

Mr. Levinson is named to the list for the fourth time for his work counseling some of the largest cities in America through bankruptcy. The Daily Journal touted his current representation of the City of Stockton which, in 2013, became the most populous city to be deemed eligible for chapter 9 relief.

Mr. Venuto is recognized for advising on one of the largest private startup company acquisitions in the U.S. in 2012:  the $1 billion acquisition of Instagram by Facebook. The deal was also notable for its unique combination of fast pace and complexity. It signed in 54 hours over Easter weekend, but did not close for several months due to the complex legal interplay between a Federal Trade Commission antitrust review and Facebook's public offering.
