The Tokyo office has recently taken on two different representations focused on rebuilding and volunteering.
First, a team is partnering with our paying client, JP Morgan, to assist Nadia, a Japanese tokutei hieirikatsudo houjin, which was born in late March 2011 from a spontaneous reaction resulting from the dramatic natural disasters which devastated the Tohoku area of Japan. Nadia’s mission is to coordinate those who seek to help in concrete and visible ways with the reconstruction of the Tohoku region, focusing on the city of Ishinomaki, Miyagi prefecture. Nadia has partnered with JP Morgan to create the ‘Morgan House Project’, the stated objective of which is to move people out of temporary housing, focusing on households with special circumstances (the elderly and individuals with disabilities). The Orrick team, consisting of real estate associate Jean Luyat and managing real estate associate Yuko Inui, will provide Nadia with the following assistance: (1) ensuring Nadia’s compliance with applicable governmental rules and regulations in connection with the Morgan House Project, particularly the donation received from JP Morgan; (2) properly documenting the donation; and (3) identifying any other possible legal issues and to ensure Nadia and its volunteers incur no liability as a result of their involvement.
Second, M&A and private equity partner Ted Johnson will lead the office’s representation of Hands On Tokyo, a charity that serves as a bilingual volunteer portal to connect individuals and groups to meaningful volunteer service opportunities in Tokyo and Tohoku region.
